Das Symposium Text in Context: African Languages between Orality and Scripturality fand vom 17.–20. Oktober 2001 an der Universität Zürich statt. Die Hauptthemen waren: Multilingualität als Quelle zum Verständnis der Bedürfnisse afrikanischer Gesellschaften im 21. Jh. und deren Auswirkungen auf Demokratie, Entwicklung und Bildung; afrikanische Sprachen im Kontext von modernen Komunikationstechnologien; orale Traditionen und Oralität als ein Schlüssel zur Kreativität in afrikanischer Kunst und Literatur.

Weitere Veranstaltungshöhepunkte waren sowohl ein literarischer Wettstreit zu dem Thema afrikanische Sprachen und afrikanischer Fußball als auch ein öffentlicher runder Tisch zu multilingualer und multikultureller Bildung in Afrika und Europa im 21. Jh. Das vorliegende Werk beinhaltet mehr als die Hälfte aller auf der Tagung gehaltener Vorträge. 54 von ihnen wurden für diese Publikation ausgewählt. Teil F auf der CD-ROM bietet eine spezielle Auswahl an Erzähltexten, die von afrikanischen Schriftstellern als Antwort auf den Wettstreit zu afrikanischen Sprachen und afrikanischem Fußball vorgelegt wurden und einige Texte von Reden, die auf dem Symposium gehalten wurden.
