Im Herbst 1921 präsentierte Walter Gropius am Bauhaus Weimar eines der wichtigsten transnationalen Kunstprojekte nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg: Unter dem Titel »Neue Europäische Graphik« lud er die künstlerische Avantgarde Europas zu einer umfassenden Grafikedition ein. Dem national ausgerichteten Kulturbegriff sollte die Idee eines kosmopolitischen Künstlerbundes entgegengehalten werden.
Dabei entstanden bis 1924 die Mappen I, III, IV und V mit Druckgrafiken deutscher, italienischer und russischer Künstler. Mappe II mit Arbeiten französischer Künstler blieb ein Fragment. Das Lindenau-Museum ist eines der wenigen Museen, das im Besitz aller vier edierten Mappen ist.
Als Beitrag zum Jubiläum »100 Jahre Bauhaus« präsentiert der Katalog alle grafischen Blätter der »Neuen Europäischen Graphik«, darunter Arbeiten von Max Beckmann, Marc Chagall, Giorgio de Chirico, Lyonel Feininger, Wassily Kandinsky, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner und Paul Klee. Daneben werden einige seltene, am Bauhaus entstandene Druckserien von Lyonel Feininger, Gerhard Marcks und Georg Muche vorgestellt, die im Besitz des Lindenau-Museums sind.
In autumn 1921 Walter Gropius presented one of the most important transnational art projects after World War I at the Weimar Bauhaus. Aiming to counter the nationally-oriented concept of culture with the idea of a cosmopolitan association of artists, he invited the artistic avant-garde of Europe to contribute to a comprehensive graphic edition entitled “Neue Europäische Graphik” (New European Graphics).
By 1924, portfolios I, III, IV and V were created with prints by German, Italian and Russian artists; portfolio II with works by French artists remained a fragment. The Lindenau Museum is one of the few museums in possession of the four published portfolios.
As a contribution to the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus, the catalog presents all graphic sheets of the “New European Graphics” series, including works by Max Beckmann, Marc Chagall, Giorgio de Chirico, Lyonel Feininger, Wassily Kandinsky, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and Paul Klee. The presentation additionally comprises some rare series of prints by Lyonel Feininger, Gerhard Marcks, and Georg Muche, created at the Bauhaus and also in the possession of the Lindenau Museum.
