Gräce a !'initiative du President algerien, Abdelaziz Boutetlika, soutenue par le chef de Ia
diplomatie suisse, Joseph Deiss, s'est tenu, en avril 2001, pour Ia premiere fois sur sol algerien,
un colloque international consacre a Augustin, natif de Ia ville de Thagaste (Souk
Ahras) dans l'est du pays. Africanite et universalite : tels furent les deux grands axes autour
desquels ont gravite les quelque cinquante communications presentees par des intervenants
venus de seize pays. Le premier axe visait a replacer Augustin dans sa dimension temporelle
et culturelle, dans une Afrique romaine profondement impregnee par l'heritage • libyconumide
~. Le second axe, etroitement lie au premier, abordait et soulignait quelques aspects
de Ia posterite et de l'intluence extraordinaires exercees par Ia pensee et l'ceuvre d'Augustin
a travers les äges. Les deux volumes de Ia collection • Paradosis ~ reunissent les Actes de ce
colloque, ainsi que les textes et documents iconographiques accompagnant l'exposition
• Saint Augustin : africanite et universalite ~. presentee en Algerie, a Geneve, a Fribourg, a
St-Gall, de meme que dans plusieurs autres villes europeennes, parmi lesquelles Paris, Lyon,
Marseille, Lublin et St Andrews.

Owing to the initiative of Abdelaziz Boutetlika, President of Algeria, and of Joseph Deiss,
head of the Swiss diplomatic corps, an international symposium was held in April of 2001
for the firsttime on Algerian soil to honour Augustine, a native son born in Thagaste (Souk
Ahras) in the eastern part of the country. Africanite et universalite (Africanness and universality):
these were the two principal axes around which the fifty or so papers delivered by participants
representing sixteen different countries were ordered. The first axis sought to relocate
Augustine in his temporal and cultural context, in an Africa deeply intluenced by its
" libyco-numidian " heritage. Closely linked to the first, the second axis sought to underscore
and engage certain aspects of the extraordinary legacy of Augustine's thought and
work through the ages. Two volumes of the " Paradosis " series draw tagether the symposium's
proceedings, along with texts and iconographic materials accompanying the exhibition
"Saint Augustin: africanite et universalite" presented thus far in Algeria, Geneva,
Fribourg, St. Gall, and several other European cities, among them Paris, Lyons, Marseilles,
Lublin, and St. Andrews.
