Ja, Herr Nietzsche und auch Herr Freud, tatsächlich: Die Menschheit überschreibt sich in der Religion einer Sammlung törichter Märchen. Dabei ist Gott nicht Idee und Schutzhort des Erhabenen, sondern des Dunklen und Zaghaften im Menschen. Der Mensch hat Gott erschaffen, um mit einem Giganten Teufel und Tod zu besiegen, um Macht über Seinesgleichen zu haben und um den Träumen vom ab-soluten Leben aufzuhelfen. Der Gigant ist auf immer launisch. Auch den Sorglos-Gott der „Nächsten-liebe“ kennt nur das schlichte Gemüt. Vor Gottes Zorn wird nichts bewahrt. „Die Hölle ist eine schwache Vorstellung, die uns Gott unfreiwillig von sich selbst gibt“ (Bataille). Die Religion zieht den Tod ins Leben und ist ein Schrei nach Liebe aus Mangel daran. Ein Omnipotenzwahn kämpft wider die Individuation. Mit ihr gewinnt ein „paranoider Zug, der unserer Spezies endemisch ist“ (Koestler) Gestalt. Das Gespensterspiel in tausend Varianten hat noch Realität in der Gesellschaft. Der Vernunft ist’s ein Skandal, dass „unerbittlichen Feinden der Denkfreiheit und des Fortschritts zur Erkenntnis der Wahrheit“ (Freud) Einfluss in Öffentlichkeit, Wissenschaft und Erziehung verblieb. Ein Grund dafür ist die ungemeine Verkennung des Wesens der Religion.

Yes, Herr Nietzsche, and Herr Freud too: in religion humanity provided itself with a collection of foolish fairy tales. So God is not the very concept and guardian of human sublimity but of human darkness and cowardice. Man created God in order to have a giant to defeat death and the Devil, in order to exercise power over his own kind, and in order to help his dreams of absolute life. The giant is always capricious. Even the carefree God of “loving thy neighbour” is known only to simple minds. Nothing is safe from the wrath of God. “Hell is the feeble idea God involuntarily gives us of himself” (Bataille). Religion draws death into life and is a cry for love born of a lack of love. A delusion of omnipotence fights against individuation. It gives form to the “paranoid trait endemic in our species” (Koestler). The ghost-play with its thousand variations still has reality in modern society. It is a scandal against reason that “implacable enemies of freedom of thought and of progress towards the understanding of truth” (Freud) retain influence in public life, science and education. One reason for this is the general misunderstanding of the nature of religion.
