Modest Mussorgskijs "Boris Godunow" nach Puschkins gleichnamigen Demetrius-Drama gehört zu den Opern, die das Problem der Fassung aufwerfen. Nach der Ablehnung des "Ur-Boris" von 1868-69 erfuhr das Werk eine Umarbeitung zum "Original-Boris" mit Hilfe von Mussorgskijs Freund Nikolai Rimskij-Korsakov. Diese Fassung liegt dem vorliegenden Buch zugrunde.
