Produktinformation

In just over a decade, Janelle Monáe’s career has developed from that of a promising musical innovator to that of a global media personality, who effortlessly unites a tremendous variety of seemingly contradictory roles. But as diverse as these many identities may seem, Monáe has managed to forge a remarkably coherent political agenda on the basis of her celebrity. Adeptly moving back and forth between her various roles as singer, music producer, performance artist, film actress, filmmaker, and activist, her increasingly central presence in the global media landscape makes her an ideal figure to investigate the dynamics between global media production and identity politics. This book will focus on Dirty Computer, which appeared simultaneously as an album, a 48-minute “emotion picture” and a tour in April 2018 to wide acclaim. In this ambitious transmedia project, Monáe brought together the science-fictional themes that informed her previous Afrofuturist work, resulting in a singularly focused artistic and political statement. While the music on the album can be enjoyed as an accessible collection of pop tracks, the accompanying film, music videos, stage performances, and media paratexts add layers of meaning that combine speculative world-building with anti-racist activism. This unique convergence of energies, ideas, and media platforms makes Dirty Computer an instant SFF classic.
