Der Band ist Anne Draffkorn Kilmer zum 75. Geburtstag gewidmet und enthält eine Tabula gratulatoria, ein Vorwort der Herausgeber, eine Einführung [Hickmann] und 32 Vorträge des 4. Symposiums der Internationalen Studiengruppe Musikarchäologie in Kloster Michaelstein vom 19.-26. September 2004. Diese sind sechs Bereichen zugeordnet betreffend den archäologischen Kontext [6 Beiträge], wiederentdeckte und rekonstruierte Zusammenhänge kontextloser Objekte [6], Handwerk im Dienst von Kontextinterpretationen [5], Klänge, Tonordnungen und Notationen im Kontext der Musik [4], soziokulturelle Zusammenhänge [4] sowie ikonographische und literarische Kontextstudien [7]. Räumlich reicht das Spektrum von der Neuen Welt [Inkazeit] über Europa bis China, zeitlich vom Neolithikum bis zur Neuzeit. An Instrumenten finden sich Sackpfeifen, Pfeifen, Blasgefäße, Rohrblattinstrumente, Leiern, Rasseln, Trommeln, Trompeten, Hörner etc. Außerdem werden Fragen der Datierung ebenso behandelt, wie solche von Oktavverständnis, Instrumentenstimmung oder der sozialen Stellung von Musikerinnen und Musikern.

The volume is dedicated to Anne Draffkorn Kilmer for her 75th birthday and contains a tabula gratulatoria, a foreword of the editors, an introduction [Hickmann], and 32 papers from the 4th symposium of the International Study Group on Music Archaeology at Michelstein Monastery from 19th to 26th September 2004. They are classified into 6 sections on archaeological contexts [6 articles], rediscovered and reconstructed contexts of objects without context [6], the impact of craftsmanship on the re-interpretation of contexts [5], sounds, tonal orders, and notations in the context of musical conceptions [4], socio-cultural contexts [4] as well as iconographical and literary sources for the reconsideration of contexts [7]. With regard to space, the spectrum spans the globe from the New World [Inca period] via Europe to China. The time span reaches from the Neolithic to Modern Times. With regard to instruments, there are bagpipes, whistles, whistling bottles, wind instruments with a reed tongue, lyres, rattles, drums, trumpets, horns etc. Additionally, dating problems are addressed as is the concept of the octave, the tuning of instruments, and the social position of male and female musicians.
