This book considers the development of children’s literature and print culture for children in China and demonstrates how children’s texts published during the Qing and Republican period reflect changes in Chinese concepts of childhood and attitudes towards education. Considering a range of different genres and types of publication — tracts, novels, textbooks, primers, and periodicals, including the first Chinese-language children’s periodical, the Xiaohai yuebao (The Child’s Paper), the book examines how transnational networks, missionaries, diplomats and migrants contributed to the multi-directional transmission of knowledge and the spread of print culture in the nineteenth century, and highlights the transnational flows of texts and cultures during a time when children’s literature in China and the West was developing rapidly in line with imperialism and missionary activity around the globe. It sheds light on a little-explored aspect of Chinese literary history with contemporary resonance, contributing to the fields of children’s literature, book history, missionary history, and translation studies.
