Das Yeyi ist eine Bantusprache, die vornehmlich in den Sumpfgebieten des Okavangodeltas und des Linyanti in Botswana und dem Caprivizipfel Namibias gesprochen wird. Unterschiedlichen Schätzungen zufolge beläuft sich die Sprecherzahl auf etwa 25.000 bis 30.000 Sprecher. Diese lassen sich grob in zwei Gruppen gliedern. Zum einen die Yeyi-Sprecher des Caprivi, deren Variante dieser grammatischen Beschreibung zugrunde liegt, und zum anderen die Yeyi-Sprecher aus Botswana.

Insgesamt betrachtet lebt die Gemeinschaft der Yeyi in einer sprachlich und ethnisch stark heterogenen Gesellschaft. Sie ist durch ein hohes Maß an Mehrsprachigkeit gekennzeichnet, wobei sich in Botswana zur Zeit ein Sprachwechsel zum Tswana vollzieht. Im Caprivistreifen hingegen, ist die mehrsprachige Situation der Yeyi als stabil zu betrachten. Die Sprecherzahl liegt hier allerdings bei höchstens 5.000.

Das Yeyi ist eine klassische Bantusprache, gekennzeichnet durch seinen agglutinierenden Charakter, sein voll funktionsfähiges Klassen- und Konkordanzsystem und den zahlreichen Bantu-typischen Verbalderivationen. Im Gegensatz zu den benachbarten Bantusprachen weist das Yeyi auch systematisch integrierte Elemente aus den Khoisansprachen auf, wie z.B. die Schnalzlaute.

Die vorliegende Sprachbeschreibung ist synchron und morphosyntaktisch ausgerichtet. Sie enthält zahlreiches Sprachmaterial und ist sowohl als Ausgangspunkt für weitere vergleichende und typologische Studien als auch als Grundlage für die Erstellung weiterer Sprachmaterialien verwendbar. Ein besonderes Augenmerk wurde in dieser Grammatik auf das Tempus-Aspekt System in Abhängigkeit von pragmatischen Aspekten in Erzählungen der Vergangenheit gerichtet.
